Sample Question - Recruiting Metrics

QUESTION

We are looking for industry benchmark metrics to gauge our performance in direct hire recruiting and staffing for the many clients we serve. The clients we serve are primarily in the aircraft/aerospace, power generation, turbo machinery, electronics, chemical process and telecommunications industries. Metrics accumulated from these specific industries would be ideal, however, we recognize that collection and measurement usually is not industry specific. In addition, we are interested in measuring our performance against other firms (competition) performing recruiting, staffing placement services, as well as, performance metrics against traditional in-house employment departments. If metrics are available on a geographic basis, we would be interested in central U.S.

ANSWER

There are four associations that we have found that would be excellent resources for you to consider joining or keeping an eye on their available resources: http://www.natss.org;  National Association of Personnel Services Online (http://www.napsweb.org),  and SHRM's Employment Management Association (http://www.shrm.org/ema), and http://www.staffing.org.

The National Association of Personnel Services Online:

On the Napsweb.org site there is an annual Operational Analysis Survey . This is a 17 page survey that can be downloaded for FREE at http://www.napsweb.org/publish.htm.  To purchase the survey it costs $75 or it is free with membership. Some of the statistics include:

  • Five job orders for one placement
  • Four send outs for one placement
  • The average number of client visits to produce a job order is 3
  • The average fee for a professional placement is $13,272 versus a clerical at $4,702

SHRM's Employment Management Association (EMA)

They do an annual Cost Per Hire and Staffing Metrics Survey. To order the survey go to http://www.shrm.org/ema  and select Benefits, then select Survey Reports. The cost of the survey is $45.00.

This year the survey had fewer than 100 respondents, thus this year’s data is not statistically valid. To counteract the inaccuracy, they provides a ten-year trend with the data. Before buying the survey we were able to find out some of the statistics and information including:

    1. Average time to fill a position: 46 days

    2. Average time to fill and start: 59 days

    3. Average cost to hire a nonexempt employee: 8-10% of annual salary

    4. Average cost to hire an exempt employee: 18-20 of annual salary.

    5. They can supply info for 6 regional areas

    6. They provide average utilization of sourcing methods like ads, Internet, agencies etc.

    7. They provide info on average cost by source to hire, Cost/hire using the Internet.

    8. They provide average relocation costs.

    9. They provide average sign on bonuses.

Staffing.org

They also have an annual "metrics" survey that sounds wonderful but it will cost about $3500. Their site provides an unlimited amount of resources related to articles, links, books, etc. related to just this topic. It's worth a visit if you need more.
