Sample Question-Assessment Centers

QUESTION

Could you guide me in designing an assessment center on the basis of various competencies involved?

ANSWER

1) Begin by observing and recording how the best employees in each job category do the work.

2) Based on this information, you will be able to identify the key competencies and be more able to clearly define them (i.e. problem solving and communications).

3) To ensure the competencies are accurate and inclusive, you may want to involve some of the employees and respective supervisors in the review of the competencies. They will have a better idea of the accuracy of the competencies.

4) With competencies determined, you are ready to develop simulations for their assessment center to replicate the work (i.e. like checking temperature) Again, using a team of employees that you feel are successful in the job to pilot the center or assist in the development of the center will ensure it is more successful.

5) Schedule trainees or potential employees to go through the assessment center.

6) Track the results!!! You want to be assess their knowledge before they go through the center and how it improved and impacted their job after the center. Is it working? Do you need to make any changes? Is there any biases or adverse discrimination occur because of the system. (Depending on where you are located, you may need to do a number of pilots and analysis of the results to ensure no legal ramifications on the use of the center on job decisions).
