Sample Question-Diversity in HealthcareQUESTION What do you think should be a "best practice diversity policy" on a patient's right to refuse a nurse or attending physician based on the health care provider's color?
As the world "shrinks" because people are extremely mobile, every country in the world is becoming very diverse in terms of its population. Organizations certainly need to be responsive to their customers - in the case of health care providers, patients and their families - however, organizational values and mission must be met as well. I've observed that organizations are establishing core values and a mission statement that indicates they wish to recognize, understand, value and manage a diverse workforce and customer base. The objective is to provide the best service or product for customers that is available. If the best service available happens to be health care providers of a different race or culture than some of the patients, it's the patient's choice of course whether to accept or deny the service. However, I do not recommend that a health care organization attempt to switch shifts or rotate staff simply to comply with patients' biases or stereotypes about people of color. Rather, I recommend that patients who express uneasiness be educated about the talents, skills, and credentials of those who are providing them with health care services.
